2026 Lenten Season
Bishop Alberto Rojas' Lenten Message
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Peace and well-being to you and your families in these winter months. As you know, we are entering the desert of Lent. This is a sacred and holy time for us as we follow the example of Jesus when he retreated to the desert for 40 days of prayer and fasting in preparation for his mission to save the world from evil. We are called during Lent to take an honest look at ourselves, our relationship with God and our relationship with our brothers and sisters. In this spiritual desert there are less distractions, we can see things as they really are, including some painful truths that we might not want to face. Indeed, there is much pain and suffering in our world today. It is almost overwhelming to see it in our media, whether we are watching it on television, reading about it or seeing it in our social media feed. What's our reaction to all the suffering around us? Do we respond with solidarity and prayer, or with indifference?
What is Lent? by USCCB
Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.
